We are, I think, in a collective state of despair. So, it isn’t surprising to me that I have a hard time feeling hopeful when asked “How do we fix things?” since despair is the absence or loss of hope (from the Latin “without” [de] and “to hope” [sperare]).

The irony is that capitalism has created this ecological crisis and is generating it. And the answer of capital (and this is typical of the system) is that we just need a more intensive, a more extreme form of capital accumulation.

The future is by nature unpredictable and will surprise you despite the amount of information you may have, which goes against the billionaires’ idea that they can control the world through mediums like artificial intelligence.

If you see “the future” as necessarily an extension of the path that has brought us from the past to the present, then the elite’s version seems inevitable. It is therefore crucial to break free from this idea of some kind of predestined vector taking us towards a hyper-industrial destiny.

We must not be hoodwinked by the relentless fear-mongering (concerning organics) of the agritech-agribusiness lobby, which requires farmers to continue to purchase its proprietary inputs, including synthetic fertilisers, while continuing to rollout and impose its high-input, high-energy, health-damaging model of industrial agriculture across the world.

Reduce the use of chemical fertilisers, make the chemical industry pay for pollution instead of criminalising farmers who were trapped by in the chemical treadmill through industrial agriculture.

Underneath all the babbling propaganda stories about what’s happening in our world, humanity is indeed showing signs that we are collectively slipping out of our old relationship with mental narrative.

The solution to the current food crisis is small and local, including growing food locally. But how to fund local food co-ops without pricey loans from big banks?
