Real wealth consists in things of utility and beauty, in things that help to create strong, beautiful bodies and surroundings inspiring to live in. But if man is doomed to wind cotton around a spool, or dig coal, or build roads for thirty years of his life, there can be no talk of wealth. Rich assholes and their corporations have refused their assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. They have usurped our election process and bribed our elected legislators to make them their own.
A vast country, rich enough to supply all her children with all possible comforts, and ensure well-being to all, is in the hands of a few, while the nameless millions are at the mercy of ruthless wealth gatherers, unscrupulous lawmakers, and corrupt politicians.
Growth, in its current industrial form, is a pathology. We built our entire civilization around it. We sacrificed rivers, forests, children’s futures, and our own sanity, to a logic that says more is always better.
We live in an addicted civilization. Industrialism, extraction, consumption… it’s a bender that never ends. We know it’s killing us, and still we can’t stop. That’s addiction.
You can’t fix stupid. And yet, we don’t have to consume it, cheer it, accept it, tolerate it, obey it, worship it, support it, fund it, or justify it.
