“Voices of Diversity”, a Short Film by Navdanya
by Navdanya International | Jun 14, 2023
More than 25 years ago the Diverse Women for Diversity movement started with the statement of Concern: “We women, in all our vibrant and fabulous diversity, have witnessed the increasing aggression against the human spirit, human mind and human body and the continued invasion of and assault upon the Earth and all her diverse species. And we are enraged. We demand of governments, international organizations, transnational corporations and individual men who share our rage, that they address the crisis that has been caused by the creation of mono cultures and the reduction, enclosure, and extinction of biological and cultural diversity. We insist that those who would address the crisis listen to and take leadership from women, indigenous peoples, farmers, and all who have raised these concerns at the local level. We ask them to heed those whose wisdom, stewardship, knowledge and commitment has already been demonstrated by the preservation of the diversity we celebrate today.”
Who are these women, who have dedicated their lives to protecting this earth? What do their voices stand for? Do they speak for us all?
In this short film, we showcase the diverse voices of people who are silently working on re-establishing harmony with the Earth. People, who for generations, have carried on a way of life that breeds health, biodiversity and vitality to ecosystems.
For over 30 years, the Navdanya Movement has worked to connect these local voices to make sure the global discourse stays grounded in the reality experienced by the majority.
This has been the centre of our movement building.
A movement dedicated to resisting the vision of a small few, that see the earth as dead, empty and easy to manipulate. This vision of a small few has brought us the imposition of the industrial agriculture that has poisoned so many, destroyed life on Earth and has sent our climate systems into chaos.
Over the last years, there have been various attempts to deregulate GMOs, and introduce new gene editing technologies with no government oversight, painting both as part of a ‘sustainable future’. But as the voices of those here state, such technologies have only caused harm and destruction.
At a time when global lawmakers are pushing new technologies that will only further entrench the consequences of the industrial paradigm, it is vital to listen to the diversity of voices already practising an ecological way of life. Voices that are also on the frontlines of the destruction caused by industrial agriculture. The voices of women, indigenous people, peasants, and small farmers.
